In this video, we will share the importance of creating a
floor plan and a space plan early in the downsizing process.

When it comes to downsizing, especially for those who have lived in their current home for a really long time, it’s not just about packing boxes and moving furniture. It’s a process that requires careful planning and consideration. We often hear the question, “What would be the first thing I should do when I start thinking about downsizing?” Well, you’re in luck because we have the answer.

Realistically Assess Your Space

After helping hundreds of downsizers successfully move, we have found that having a floor plan (and space plan) early in the process is absolutely critical.

Imagine you’re moving from a spacious five-bedroom house with three bathrooms and a three-car garage into a cozy two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo with limited storage in a one or two-car garage. It’s clear you’ll have more belongings than will fit comfortably in your new space. This is where a space plan becomes invaluable.

Understanding Space Plans

A space plan goes beyond just arranging furniture; it takes into account every nook and cranny of your new living space. It considers your cabinets, closets, and garage, recognizing that each area has finite dimensions.

For instance, think about your walk-in closet in your current home. It might have three levels of clothing racks and a built-in organizer for your shoes. However, your new bedroom could have just two levels of racks and no built-in shoe storage. These details matter, and measuring those clothing rods can help you determine what you can realistically fit into your new closet

Kitchen Considerations

Don’t forget about your kitchen cabinets. If you had custom cabinets designed in your old home with extra depth to accommodate larger dishes, platters, or bowls, you can’t assume they will fit seamlessly into your new kitchen. Older homes or those with standard cabinet sizes might require some adjustments.

Paper or Digital

There are so many ways to create a space plan. Simple graph paper with a pencil and ruler work just fine. If you are a little more ambitious and tech-savvy, there are also online tools you can use to create multi-dimensional plans. The key – be realistic and create the plan to scale. This isn’t the time to guess.

If creating a space plan isn’t your forte, don’t worry. Not everyone has an architect in the family or the technical skills to do this online. We invite you to reach out for assistance from our friendly and experienced professional move management team at OKC Mature Moves or someone else you can trust who is experienced in both the art and the science of downsizing.
