In this video, we share how you can join the Oklahoma Downsizers Club,
which will help you prepare for when you begin the downsizing process.
You may be aware that we founded the Senior Living Truth Series back in 2016. The series is designed to educate, equip, and empower people about a variety of things related to homeownership as they got older. But now it’s not just about real estate or homeownership matters – it’s grown to be so much more. Audience sizes are now approaching 200 people each month!
The size of this group has gotten so large that people who originally started coming to learn about real estate and downsizing related matters needed extra attention. They wanted a more personal and intimate setting to work through the specifics of downsizing and relocating to a smaller home.
So… the Oklahoma Downsizers Club was launched in 2021 in response to this need.
We have observed that the downsizing process, from the “thinking about it” phase to the actual move and home sale, can take as little as one year to as many as five years. In this timeframe, decision fatigue can set in and the exhaustion of preparation can be exhausting, especially when doing it alone. Conversely, people who plan ahead and create a support system early in the process tend to have far better outcomes. They are less stressed, healthier, and happier because they had a proven plan, experienced professionals to help out, and a caring support system for encouragement along the way.
That is why the criteria for joining the Club is that someone plans to downsize in roughly 1 to 5 years. Naturally, they aren’t obligated to do this, but it’s what they currently have in mind. People who are thinking they want to do it sooner (in the next 12 months) can still join, but they will need to move a bit faster through the process, so we do a lot of one-on-one consultation with them from the start.
Here is what Oklahoma Downsizers Club members and graduates tell us they appreciate about the group:
“Being part of this group gave us the confidence we needed to move forward. It requires a lot of trust when it comes to hiring the right people to help and we had time to create trusting relationships by being a part of the group. In the end, it was the easiest move we have ever made – and we have moved a lot.” – Martha Siler
“What you do is a ministry. I felt like everyone in the group was with me each step of the way and I had all the resources I needed to feel confident and capable.” – Linda Greenley
“I got support with everything including helping me find a place in Texas, moving, doing an estate sale, and finally, selling my home. There were so many details I had not thought about and the group gave me a place to investigate and get answers.” – Martha Pendleton
Because the group size is limited to 20 people at a time, we are able to answer personalized questions and have conversations about tough and often emotional topics. It’s more than just logistics because for many people this is a life-changing decision.
So far we have graduated about 10 households. Some are single people and some are couples. Many of them, especially if they stay local, want to keep coming even though they have completed their moves! We encourage them to come back and share what they have learned with the others in the group and they can come until they feel they have settled into their new place successfully.
The membership fee is $200. That is mainly so that we know who is serious about downsizing and not just looking for a social group. The good news is that when they eventually move, they get a $200 credit toward their move management services. So, it’s actually free in the end.
